Assess the risk
Choose the appropriate
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) to
respond to the spill safely.
Consult the appropriate
literature:
• MSDS
• Chemical manufacturer’s
literature
• PPE manufacturer’s literature
PPE should be considered for every
part of your body: suits, face
protection, gloves and boots.
Limit the spill area by
blocking, diverting or
confining the spill:
• Use PIG

• Use appropriate absorbents
to ensure effective
response
• Use non-absorbent barriers such as a
SPILLBLOCKER

Stopping the spread of liquid to a water
source, minimising the spill area and
protecting drains are the priorities.
Once the spill is confined,
locate and stop the source by:
• Turning the container
upright; or,
• Closing the valve; or,
• Plugging the leak in the
damaged container
Reassess the incident and
develop a cleanup action
plan. Use:
